In an ideal world, we’d have hours of free time each day with nothing else to do but workout. In reality, the majority of your day involves us sitting at a desk or in the car, with little time (and motivation) to get that daily workout in.
So we should be looking at packing our days with loads of sneaky exercise that all adds up to burn more calories.
Here are 7 ways in which you can sneak in some extra activity to your daily routine:
1. Take the stairs
Walking a flight of stairs is one of the best exercises you can do. It tones the legs and bum since you’re fighting gravity, and it burns calories. So wherever you are, opt for the stairs over taking the lift or escalator. Even if you’re going to the 14th floor, challenge yourself to walk the stairs to level 5 and jump in the lift once you get there.
2. Rev up your trainers, not your engine
Walking is a low-impact activity, making it one of the safest ways to exercise without putting strain on your muscles or joints. Walking an extra 20 minutes each day can make a big impact on your weight loss, so try to build walking into your normal everyday routine. For example, you could:
- go for a walk at lunchtime - this can give you an energy boost for the afternoon
- walk to work instead of driving
- get off the bus a stop earlier than usual
- walk to the newsagent or post office instead of using the car
3. Get those chores done
Cleaning the entire house, mowing the lawn, weeding and washing your car sure aren’t easy jobs. But they have to be done. Instead of putting them off, get out there and get stuck in. You won’t have to worry about that 5km run if you spend a couple of hours tidying up.
4. Sit up straight
Mum was right – sitting up straight and having good posture is great for your spine, but you also end up using your abdominal muscles more over the seven or eight hours that you might be sitting at your desk, which can only be a good thing!
5. Ditch the trolley
If you haven’t got a massive shop to do, then instead of grabbing trolley, why not grab a basket? Switch arms every now and then to even out your strength building workout, or even carry two baskets!
6. Make your social life active
Next time you’re catching up with friends or family, suggest a walk around the lake, hike, yoga class or any activity that gets you moving. It won’t end up feeling like a sweat sesh because you’re socialising at the same time.
7. Get some “action”
The "average" sex session lasts about 30 minutes and burns between 50 and 100 calories. It doesn't sound like much, but sex is a physical activity like any other where you get out of it what you put into it, so if you are vigorous between the sheets, you'll burn more ;)
