Hooray, the weekend is here! But the weekend can be a double-edged sword for lots of people - because it means slipping up, falling off the diet, and getting out of the exercise routine.
Is that true for you?
If you struggle with weekends, you know how frustrating it is to have to “start again” every Monday (or maybe every Tuesday - because a slip-up of a weekend can often stray into Monday, too).
The main reason people slip up at weekends isn’t lack of willpower like you might think. It’s because of the change in routine compared to the working week.
On Friday night, there’s no need to get to bed at a set time, because you won’t be getting up for work on Saturday. And on Saturday, your alarm isn’t set for work. So then you stay up late on Saturday night, then feel tired on Sunday. But it’s OK, because you can have a slow start (that’s what Sundays are for, right?) Then you stay up late on Sunday, because you’re not really tired. Then BOOM, Monday morning’s alarm hits and you feel terrible! Like you need a weekend to get over the weekend.
Weekends can be full of social engagements, meals out, maybe even a day or two away. Which is all lovely - after all, you need a break! But it’s not doing your weight loss or fitness goals any good.
So what’s the solution? You want to lose some weight and get fitter. But you don’t want to live like a fitness martyr and give up your weekends.
Here’s what we suggest.
You need to focus on your fat loss and fitness habits every day, even at the weekends. So that means those habits have to be realistic, enjoyable, and part of your life.
- Walking (with your dog, your partner, family, or just by yourself maybe listening to some music)
- Healthy cooking (finding meals and recipes that you enjoy but help you manage your weight)
- Exercise (just a few times a week, not every day)
- Healthy food shopping (not one shopping list for the week and one for the weekend)
- Treats in moderation (spaced out all week, not over-eating on a Saturday night)
- Being aware of what you’re eating (and being honest - even at the weekend) Get the idea?
Weekends are a great time to relax - and it’s important that you do. But relaxing doesn’t have to mean letting go of your healthy, happy habits.
Those women who are “effortlessly slim” actually just keep consistent with their small, realistic habits Monday-Sunday. Because they’ve found a way to ENJOY eating well, moving more, and exercising.
